diggin' the adobe

Church

spending time in albuquerque kinda made me wanna live in a little adobe bungalow.  a little adobe bungalow with a bright blue door.  and i'd wear a long flowy skirt, an armful of silver bangles, and a vintage ring set with a giant chunk of turquoise.  wanna come over and join me for some green chile and blue tortilla enchiladas?

today i will over use parantheses

ahhh...mountains in the spring.

i loved seeing piles of snow hanging on among the blooming flowers.

i loved feeling the warm sun against the back of my neck.  (yes, i wore sunblock to avoid burning!)

today it looks like rain.  (no sunblock needed.)

i'm wearing my new earrings (thank you becks!) in honor of the dark clouds (and also because they rock).

ciao!

one highlight of my friends' visit was a hike in Eldorado Canyon State Park.  it is a gorgeous place and the trails were practically empty.  we watched a bunch of rock climbers and confirmed my desire to NEVER EVER rock climb.  i admire folks who climb but i prefer to stay on the ground.

there is a human or maybe a gorilla face in the rocks in the bottom photo.  can you see it?

monday always comes too fast...

we made some friends during our afternoon in boulder (located about 30 minutes north of denver).

my parents' visit was an excuse to leave the city on a snowy day and admire tulips (photos to come later this week) and scultpures while wrapped in scarves and gloves.

the weekend felt short but fun. we ate, played scrabble, walked, ate, learned about colorado cowgirls, shopped, drove around neighborhoods that may become ours, and ate a little more.

today i am homesick for new york.

i need to buy my ticket for a summer visit east.

i love construction

we visited the site of a future HIV clinic in la ciudad juarez.

it's going to be an amazing place.

even it's bones are inspiring.

el paso feels like a border city.

it's dusty and dry.

spanish and english are spoken by most people.

you can buy cowboy boots on every other corner.

we stayed across the street from a shooter's supply shop.

gotta love texas.

texas bound...

this week i am traveling to el paso, texas and la ciudad juarez across the border in mexico.

checking out new cities is always a little exciting.  even if they are in texas.

i hope to be posting again later this week.  maybe with some fun photos from my trip.

mushrooms!!!!!!!!!!!

Shrooms

my a fanciful twist mushrooms arrived this week.  they are my favorite new toy.  i love moving them around and seeing how they look in different spots in our apartment.

Shrooms3_3

right now they are living on the bookshelf in our main room.  i think they like to read almost as much as i do.

vanessa also sent me a packet of her lovely postcards.  thank you vanessa!!!!!!!!

the art in the above photo is an original piece by jen corace (top), a postcard advertising a show in soho by josh george (bottom left), and a metal postcard reporduction of a piece by eduardo chillida (bottom right) bought during our honeymoon in spain.

Galeria_2_01

there is a fabulous museum dedicated to chillida's work located a short drive from the city of san sebastian.  it consists of an outdoor sculpture garden and an old farmhouse which holds some works on paper and smaller sculptures.

Obras_publicas_02

if i could be anywhere right now i might choose to go back to san sebastian, where i could eat fabulous food, drink txakoli (a basque white wine with light bubbles), visit the chillida museum, search out the chillida sculptures above, and maybe find my first wedding ring (which was lost at the beach).

instead, i will go get a haircut.

have a great weekend!

i know!

i remember first going to LA as a teenager and feeling like i was in a time warp of old cars, vintage neon signs, and hamburger joints that had remained the same since the 1950's.  being from the more humid, snow-ridden, and dense northeast these sights were new and very exciting for me.

Charleswithflag150_2

as i am still a fan of such retro kitsch (in moderation), i was excited to see an ad for a vintage slideshow performance by charles phoenix in the auditorium of a local denver elementary school.   he provided hilarious commentary to slides from the 50s and 60s that were layered with odd, funny, and sometimes frightening people and their homes.  one of my favorite parts of the night was hearing about his appearance on the martha stewart show and how martha yelled at him when he pointed out similarities between pumpkins she decorated and one of his old photos.  and then yelled at him again when he hinted she might be a bridezilla.

his love for old things in tacky increased my desire to check out some old and apparently fabulous sites in colorado.  who new my new state contained such wonders?

1. casa bonita

a huge theme restaurant that first opened in 1974, casa bonita offers mariachi singers, flame throwers, cliff divers, 4 different themes dining rooms (one of which is the sleeping beauty room) AND horrible "mexican" food.  one friend described the burritos to me in the following way, "you know those frozen burritos you bought in 1984 that you think are still somewhere in the back your freezer?  well, casa bonito found them, defrosted them, and serves them daily!"

2. the north pole

the north pole was built in 1956 so we could all visit santa and his home all year round!

Mineride

i wonder if the mine ride still exists?  it looks VERY exciting!  i adore riding in circles, especially if there is a cute donkey pulling me along.

there are two more i've already seen and want to share but this post is getting long and as i said earlier, i like my kitsch in moderation.

have a great weekend!
