her dolls have amazing personality.

some of them look so real that they are creepy.

these are my favorite.  i find them fascinating.

and her photography is pretty awesome too.

i just wish i could read her writing.

happy weekend!

today, i am inspired by raw-looking walls...

i would love to read a book in this room housing ana's collage (photo by nadja stemmer).

450pxwillowbank_plaster_wall2

perhaps the pages will transport me to a classroom in the school of restauration arts at willowbank (photo taken by achim hering) in ontario, canada.  i am their star pupil.

Grey

or, maybe, i will watch the young blushing nun occupying this room (image from marie claire maison).  she brushes her brown hair and writes her mother a short letter.  she sleeps here every night until a midnight in june when she runs away through the fields of grapes and wildflowers to the open arms of her forbidden future lover.

then i close my book (which is apparently the mundane tale of a student who fixes up old  homes and furniture or a cheesy romance novel), admire ana's collage one more time, walk out of nadja's room and back into my living room where i sit and type on my computer.

victorian modern

Ist2_641072_victorian_and_modern

i really love a good juxtoposition of old and new.  (photo above obviously from istockphoto.)

i am particularly interested in a combination of victorian and classic modern. (photo from quibbly.)

but it's not easy to find this done well.

i enjoy door 16 but would also love to find more examples where both styles of furniture are integrated.

any ideas?

eek!

Mustang_20080212_03

ken hamel of the denver arts blog took this great photo of the SCARY mustang sculpture that was recently installed at the denver international airport.  luis jimenez, the artist who created the 32-foot tall scuplture, was killed in 2006 when a piece of the horse fell on him.

you may be familiar with jimiez's daughter, elisa, who was on the current season of project runway.  other contestants on the show expressed thoughts that elisa might be from another planet and i wonder if it might be the same one as this mustang.  doesn't it look like lasers will being to shoot from his eyes at any moment?

this weekend...

mike gave me a little blue car.  i spent hours pulling it along my floors and counter tops.

                Meter_cosy_close

jordan spotted a meter cosy near fancy tiger.

a link noreen sent me led to brooklyn tweed.  i need to learn how to knit lace.

handmade hearts

Bbb6_1

50 hearts cut from vintage quilts (available on ebay).

my favorite valentine came from isaiah, a 7 year-old boy who participated in an afterschool program i helped run while in college.  despite the discouragement of his giggling friends, he ran up and handed me a crude heart cut out of construction paper.  quilted hearts are lovely, but nothing beats the innocence of a construction paper heart.

happy valentine's day!

Yeti

thank you megan whitmarsh.  if it wasn't for your art i might not know the definition of a yeti (an abominable snowman).  and if i didn't know what a yeti was, i might not have won scrabble on sunday.  and while winning isn't everything, it sure does feel good.

also, julie morstad has a nice new show.

an extravagant treat...

Tartare

-fatty tuna tartare with caviar, fresh wasabi, and a japanese mountain plum

-salmon and yellowtail new-style sashimi (not pictured)

Cod

-black cod (left is soy-glazed, right is miso-glazed) with lightly fried jalapeno and japanese eggplant.

Sushi

-goldeneye snapper sushi (DELICIOUS), amberjack sushi, and spicy tuna roll toped with seared tuna

-yelowtail roll with daikon, avocado, and some other yummy fillings (not pictured)

Dessert

orange cheesecake, freshly made vanilla ice cream with rice crisps, chocolate and strawberries, and oozing chocolate cake

i adore sushi sasa!

(i highly recommend it to anyone living in or near denver.  make a recommendation and don't forget to stop by the ATM on your way downtown.)

i want to make a rag rug

i love the idea of something wildly colorful and intentionally imperfect.

below are some vintage examples from ebay that i saved to inpire me.  the top one reminds me of a flower or a medical diagram of a cell.  looking at it gives me the jitters (in the best way possible).
