Ecuador has many wacky traditions for celebrating the new year, so I thought I´d share some of them so if anyone needs some luck, money, love, travels, etc. you can try them out too.
2. After midnight, run around the block with an empty suitcase. This will bring you many travels in the new year.
3. For financial prosperity in the coming year, wear money in your shoe.
4. My favorite - after midnight put on a pair of new underwear in one of the following colors: yellow for prosperity and happiness (the most popular choice & the one jordan and i will be sporting, red for passion, pink for love, green for health, or white for clarity.
5. Burn a puppet (called a viejo año, or old year). This represents the end of the old and the beginning of the new. Stalls all over the city are selling paper mache heads of government leaders (hello bush!), super heroes, and anonymous faces that can be attached to stuffed old clothing and set afire. We will be making (and burning) a viejo año with our friends, Sebas and Julie.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! FELIZ AÑO!
PS-I chopped off my hair yesterday. Not that it was long to begin with but now it´s really quite short. I didn´t mean to do it, I just went to the salon and told the guy I wanted a bunch off because it had gotten all long and ratty and ended up with a short cut. I think I like it but it´s too early to tell for sure.
